Your schedule

Day 1

  1. 09:00 Belfry (Belfort) – The 83 m medieval belfry with 366 steps up to a panorama over the roofs of Bruges, plus its carillon.
  2. 10:00 Market Square (Markt) – The medieval main square, dominated by the Belfry and lined with stepped gables and horse-drawn carriages.
  3. 10:30 Burg square – The old seat of power, framed by the Gothic City Hall, the Basilica of the Holy Blood and the Liberty of Bruges.
  4. 10:45 Basilica of the Holy Blood – Two chapels on the Burg: a Romanesque lower church and an ornate upper chapel holding the relic of the Holy Blood.
  5. 11:15 City Hall (Gothic Hall) – One of the oldest Gothic city halls in the Low Countries, with a painted vaulted hall and a history of Bruges and the sea.
  6. 14:00 Rozenhoedkaai – The Rosary Quay, Bruges’s most photographed corner, with the Belfry rising over the canal and old gables.
  7. 14:20 Canal boat tour – A 30-minute guided trip in an open boat from Jan van Eyckplein to the Beguinage, past the best-known canal views.
  8. 15:30 Choco-Story (chocolate museum) – The 5,500-year story of cocoa and chocolate, with a live chocolate-making demonstration and tastings.

Day 2

  1. 09:30 Church of Our Lady (Michelangelo’s Madonna) – Brick Gothic church with a 115 m spire, Michelangelo’s Madonna and the tombs of Charles the Bold and Mary.
  2. 10:30 St John’s Hospital (Sint-Janshospitaal, Memling) – A 12th-century hospital with six Memling masterpieces, the St Ursula Shrine and a 17th-century pharmacy.
  3. 11:40 Bonifacius Bridge & Arentshof – A tiny, much-photographed stone bridge between the Church of Our Lady and the Gruuthuse, beside the quiet Arentshof garden.
  4. 14:00 Groeningemuseum – Six centuries of Flemish art, from Van Eyck, Memling and Bosch to Magritte, in the Dijver museum quarter.
  5. 15:45 De Halve Maan brewery – The family brewery of Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik: a 45-minute tour with a rooftop view and a beer at the end.
  6. 17:00 Beguinage (Begijnhof) – A UNESCO-listed courtyard of whitewashed houses around a green, still home to women living quietly.
  7. 17:30 Minnewater (Lake of Love) – The Lake of Love: swans, willows and the old lock house on the southern edge of the old town, beside a quiet park.

Good to know

Practical info & fares

Getting there by train

  • From Brussels-South there are 3 trains an hour, about 1 hour; from Brussels Airport change at Brussels-South
  • Get off at 'Brugge' (the station by the old centre), not 'Brugge Sint-Pieters'
  • The Markt is a 20-minute walk from the station, past plenty of sights on the way
  • Coming by car: park at the station car park or a Park&Ride; cars cannot cross the centre

Walk, and mind the cobbles

  • The centre is about 2 km across: almost everything is 15 minutes on foot from the Markt
  • Cobbles everywhere: comfortable shoes beat heels; bags with wheels rattle
  • Cyclists share most streets (30 km/h zone): stay alert near the Markt, the Burg and Katelijnestraat
  • De Lijn buses 1 and 2 run between the station and the centre about every 5 minutes (€3, 60 minutes)

Crowds and the best hours

  • Day-trippers fill the Markt and Rozenhoedkaai from about 11:00 to 16:00: go early in the morning or after 17:00
  • The Belfry is popular and often has a queue: book a time slot online
  • Evenings are quiet and the lit-up canals are at their best; weekdays outside school holidays are calmer than weekends

Musea Brugge Card

  • The card is valid 72 hours at all open Musea Brugge locations, once per location
  • It only starts at your first visit and can be activated up to a year after buying
  • It costs €49 for adults; children under 13 are free everywhere (Belfry: under 7) and need no card
  • Still book a time slot online for the Belfry

Canal boats

  • A tour takes 30 minutes and starts from one of five landing stages; adults pay €15 (price valid to 31 Dec 2026)
  • March to October boats sail in principle daily 10:00–18:00, last departure 17:30
  • November to February at least one landing stage is open each day; boats do not sail after dark
  • The weather decides: a rainy winter day can mean no boats

Mondays, closing days and events

  • Many museums close on Monday, and restaurants often close one or two weekdays: check before you go
  • Kitchens close early, often around 21:00
  • On Ascension Day the Procession of the Holy Blood (14 May 2026; 6 May 2027 by our calculation) closes the central streets and fills the Markt and Burg
  • Shops are open on most Sundays in the centre; on public holidays many close

Beer, bills and tipping

  • Service is included in Belgium: tipping is optional, rounding up or €1–2 for good service is normal
  • The legal age is 16 for beer and wine and 18 for spirits
  • Belgian beers can be 8–10 %: a tasting round is stronger than it looks
  • Water is served in bottles unless you ask for tap water ('kraantjeswater')

Day trips: Damme and the coast

  • Damme is a pleasant ride by bike along the canal from the centre (Blue-bike and Hoppy shared bikes exist at the station)
  • The coast is a short train ride: trains from Bruges go on to Blankenberge, Ostend and Knokke
  • Day trips are not in the planner: keep a separate day for them
